Building & Grounds

The School was built in 1871 with a second storey added in the 1890's. It was modernised inside and a playground added in 1967. Suspended ceilings were fitted in 1980-81 & 1999. The School Improvement Plan allows for a rolling programme of re-decoration throughout the school. The Nursery was extended in 1997.

The ground floor consists of a secure entrance and administration area, a Hall/Dining Room and kitchen, and a Foundation Stage Unit with cloakroom and toilets. The first floor consists of four classrooms, Junior Library, Head teacher’s Room, Reprographics and Staff Rooms, Junior Cloakrooms and toilets. During the Summer Holiday of 2004 alteration of the upstairs classrooms provided an internal corridor system.

A security system is in operation in the school. All external doors ensure that no entry can be made to the school from outside whilst always being free to exit from within. The school operates panic buttons in the Foundation Stage Unit.

Outside there are three hard surface play areas for recreation; a garden for quiet reflection; a hard surface for group games and toys and a larger rear playground for ball games. This area also has an exciting climbing frame. A large playing field nearby provides opportunity for football games and sports days etc. We have recently developed seating areas and a rear garden. We are currently involved in some considerable improvements to the school playgrounds in order to further the children’s playtime enjoyment.

St. James has an upper room which we use on a regular basis to support regular group work.
